On the west coast of Portugal is the dramatic capital city Lisbon. The city sits on a steep hillside with bright yellow trams running along the narrow streets. It is a relatively small city with just over half a million people of which there are many students. Wherever you look the city is full of history and was once one of the greatest ports in the world and the trading center of Europe.
There is a long list of interesting sights to see, such as the Sao Jorge Castle and the Jeronimos Monastery. The local aquarium is also claimed to be the best in Europe. Perhaps one of the best experiences Lisbon has to offer can be had simply by wandering around the labyrinth of streets and exploring the different cafes... Like Spain, eating happens late here, with dinner not kicking off until at least 9 pm.
The weather here is warm and sunny, and being on the coast, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming. Living in Lisbon is not expensive when compared to other European capitals.
