The City of Roses was created after the Second World War. It lies right next to the border with Italy, and with the neighboring city of Gorizia, it is actually inextricably linked. We could say that the two cities pass into each other. With Slovenia's accession to the European Union and the fall of the Schengen border, the transition between the two cities has become open, more natural, and connected. The city was built according to the urban design of the architect Edvard Ravnikar, and today, after the opening of the border, architects and urban planners are facing new challenges in the urban planning of both cities. An interesting and internationally known point is the common square of Gorizia, Trg Evrope, which lies in front of the Nova Gorica railway station. Its special feature is that it lies half in Slovenia and half in Italy. Nova Gorica is also famous as the place where the last French king, Charles X, is buried in the tomb of the Bourbons in the Franciscan monastery in Kostanjevica. The town on the outskirts is marked by the river Soča with the famous Solkan stone bridge and a modern kayak center, which is often the scene of domestic and international competitions. Nova Gorica is located in a pleasant Mediterranean climate, which is reflected in the mild climate and beautiful vegetation.
The city is the center of administrative, educational, cultural, and economic life in the region. It has its own university, the University of Nova Gorica, and a number of other higher education programs. Among the professional cultural institutions that enrich the cultural life of the municipality is the Goriška Museum, the Cultural Center with the city gallery and music and film program, the Slovenian National Theater Nova Gorica, the Goriška Library Franceta Bevka, the Institute for the Protection of Natural and Cultural Heritage, and the Provincial Archives in Nova Gorizia, and the cultural offer is enriched by numerous societies, associations, and clubs. In the town and its surroundings, a diverse and interesting natural and cultural heritage invites you to visit, in addition to the already mentioned Kromberk Castle, Rihemberk Castle, Basilica on Sveta Gora, Sabotin-Peace Park, Panovec Forest, Trnovo-Banjska Plateau, and many other natural and cultural beauties.
