Geologists study soil and rock formations. Human services majors have a somewhat more interesting task: understanding the structures and systems within which people live.
Groups studied may be as small as a family or as large as an entire country. Analyzing them therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach comprising elements of psychology, sociology, political science, and law.
The goal of human studies is to improve the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of individuals and society as a whole. This may take the form of direct, one-on-one interaction with people, providing support to vulnerable groups, or studying and proposing wider social initiatives.
Empathy, cultural awareness, critical thinking, and good communication skills are traits often found in those studying human services.
