Dalarna University
Description
Since being established in 1977, Dalarna University has experienced rapid growth and today is the place of study for about 16, 000 students and has close to 800 employees. Our two campuses—one based in Falun, the other in Borlange—offer a wide range of educational opportunities. Many courses and programs are developed in close collaboration with regional business and industry, as well as other social sectors. The result of such collaboration is that, over the last few years, students from Dalarna University have found employment in higher numbers than students from most other universities in Sweden, according to the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslerambetet). Here, tradition and innovation in pedagogical development work in unison. Although many of our students take our campus-based courses, over 50 percent of all students are registered in web-based distance learning courses, for which Dalarna University is nationally recognized as a pioneer. Accessible and open on a 24-hour basis, these web-based courses—our virtual campus—offer open lectures, seminars, and lessons in which participants can interact with one another using pictures, sound, and text. These are just some of the features of what is termed Next Generation Learning, and our goal is to be a leader in this innovative pedagogical field.
Student Life
Campus Borlänge is located a few minutes from the town center of Borlänge, close to the Borlänge Science Park, Framtidsdalen, where some 3,500 people are employed. Together, these institutions make for a creative and industrious hub. Also neighboring the campus is the indoor shopping center, Kupolen. Campus Falun is located just outside the town center in an area called Lugnet. Here, sporting opportunities and nature are immediately accessible: deep forests with ski trails and walks can be found beside impressive and modern sporting facilities with a hockey arena, swimming pool, gymnasium, and tennis courts—indeed, facilities to suit all sporting interests. About a 20-minute walk (1.5 kilometers) from central Falun sits Campus Falun, home to the School of Humanities and Media Studies and the School of Education, Health, and Social Studies. It is close to the Lugnet Nature Reserve and has a wide range of sporting facilities, including ski and walking trails, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, and indoor and outdoor tennis facilities. Dalarna Student Union has a number of key functions: looking out for student social welfare; organizing activities and events; responding to questions about education; networking with business and industry. Members of the Student Union soon get to know other students through involvement in activities. They receive the Mecenat Card, the Swedish national discount card for students; with it, students receive discounts in many shops and businesses, as well as on trains and buses.
