Why should I study here?

Karolinska Institutet (KI) is a globally respected medical university marked by a passion for research and a drive to contribute to the improvement of human health. As a KI student, you can become an active part of that mission and open doors to a global future. It is a one-faculty university dedicated solely to the medical and health sciences with a reputation for top quality research and innovation. It is consistently ranked in the top 50 universities globally, and the top 10 medical universities in Europe. There are international career opportunities for graduates, with close links to the public and private sectors throughout the time of study, as well as opportunities for further PhD studies - which are tuition free.Teachers at Karolinska Institutet often carry out research in parallel with teaching. This ensures that students are involved in the latest advances within the medical field. The Global Master's and Bachelor Programmes are taught entirely in English. The university incorporates an interactive teaching model that emphasises informal and close contact with teachers and facilitates the active participation of students. The Nobel connection: awarding the prestigious Nobel Prize every year has given Karolinska Institutet an invaluable contact network and a unique survey of medical research results worldwide. It is situated in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, which offers comfort and convenience: good public transport, history, culture, and business, surrounded by plenty of green space and blue water.Sweden is one of the safest countries in the world and nearly 90% of the general population speaks English.

What are the admissions criteria?

Sweden uses a centralized admissions process for all higher education programs.  Applicants apply online to the programs they are interested in. No entrance tests are required, as the basic admission criteria are a high school diploma and English proficiency. In addition, programs may have their own requirements for eligibility.

Applicants also need to include a photocopy of their passport. Another thing to note, students who are in their final year of high school can not apply until after they graduate, since they don't have a diploma.  Given that the application deadline for international students is January 15th, most students will not be able to apply for fall admission directly after high school. Also of note-no matter how many programs an applicant applies to, they will get only one offer.

Applicants are first evaluated for their first choice school.  If they meet the eligibility requirements they are admitted.  If not, they are evaluated for their second choice school, and so on.

What is student life like?

Education and research at Karolinska Institutet is mainly conducted on two campuses: KI Campus Solna and KI Campus Flemingsberg.Solna and Huddinge are two of Stockholm's neighbouring counties, Solna to the northwest and Huddinge/Flemingsberg to the south. A 10-15 minute walk or train ride is all it takes get into the city from either campus. In addition to our campus areas, KI also has established cooperation with several hospitals in and around Stockholm city.In Sweden, student unions play an important role in university life and are often influential forces at the universities. Become a member to take part of all that they have to offer! The student unions offer various social activities such as team sports, choir, theatre groups, orchestra, café, pubs, language cafés and more. Through the unions, students at Karolinska Institutet are also actively engaged in academic issues and student welfare. Students are very well represented in the decision-making bodies of Karolinska Institutet, particularly the Board of Higher Education.
