We visited Trinity before our children had committed to university in Europe and I think Trinity and the library tour is what truly sold them on the idea of studying in Europe. Walking around Trinity you feel like you are not just witnessing history but you are a part of something traditional and yet current all at once.
Right in the heart of Dublin means the university is seamlessly integrated with the city and the vibrancy of the university and the culturally rich city seem to feed off of one another and make both better around every corner. Our oldest son was interested in the Business, Economics, and Social Studies flexible degree. It stood out as unique and more general so as to give him a wide range of study areas to see what he really resonated with. This is unique because, in many EU universities, degree programs can be more specific and specialized so this was very attractive.
Our visit to Trinity was to explore the B.E.S.S. degree and get a feel for the university in Europe. It was during the BREXIT confusion and there was some idea that the EU Citizen Tuition discount would go away. I believe it did not but as dual US/Italian Citizens, we were not willing to pay 21K euros per year when our son’s other top choices were under 1000 euros per year as an EU National. The student housing we toured was around 900 euros per month and beautiful but almost double what we had seen in The Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy.
Our son didn’t end up applying to Trinity and he is now loving the Entrepreneurship and Global Innovation program at Tilburg University in The Netherlands but the visit was critical in our kids being able to picture themselves studying in Europe. It is worth noting that both boys who are currently studying in two different Dutch cities are still considering Trinity for a Master’s Degree.
