Description
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a public research university located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 1632, it is the fourth-oldest university in the country. The UvA is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of leading European universities.
The UvA offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of disciplines, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. The university is known for its high academic standards, its strong research culture, and its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The UvA is also home to a number of world-renowned research institutes, including the KNAW Institute for the Language, Culture and History of the Dutch-speaking World (Meertens Instituut), the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, and the Institute for Information and Computing Sciences (UvA-ICS).
The UvA is a popular choice for international students, with over 7,000 students from over 120 countries enrolled each year. The university offers a variety of support services for international students, including English-language programs, housing assistance, and a mentorship program.
Student Life
The UvA has four campuses located across Amsterdam. Some classes are in quaint old buildings overlooking the canals, others are in high-tech laboratories. Roeterseiland CampusThree faculties are housed at the Roeterseiland Campus: Economics and Business, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Law. CREA, the student cultural organization, is also located here. Campus development: The UvA is working to consolidate its teaching and research activities across four campuses. At one time, we had about 85 different buildings scattered across Amsterdam. Many buildings didn't meet modern-day standards for teaching and research, and there weren't enough common areas to facilitate collaboration across disciplines. There's no end to the opportunities to engage in sports in Amsterdam, but the cheapest place for students and staff of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to do so is at USC. There are also all sorts of student sports clubs you can join. The UvA also has a scheme for top-class athletes. The UvA student sports center is open seven days a week and is based in six locations spread across the city. They are located close to other UvA buildings and facilities wherever possible. There are four gyms, outdoor tennis courts, a yoga studio, climbing walls, and much more besides. You can choose from over 60 sports and various types of membership. Amsterdam has a thriving student community with various student associations. There are plenty of associations and activities for students to participate in alongside their studies.
Housing
Housing is offered for international students for one year. It's not guaranteed, but if the application is received on time it is likely that the student will be offered housing. The housing may be private or shared and ranges from around 450-650 euros per month.
