Why should I study here?

On January 8, 1632, Gerardus Vossius opened the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam, with his inaugural lecture ‘De historiae utilitate’ (On the usefulness of history). The next day, Caspar Barlaeus gave his famous lecture on the wise merchant, "Mercator Sapiens’.

What are the admissions criteria?

International students apply directly to the school, not through studies link. A high school diploma that is equivalent to the Dutch VWO is required.  For US students, this requires an IB diploma, and 4 APs with scores of 3+ or one year of college credits. Applicants from other countries can check the requirements for VWO level equivalency here. The rolling admission period ends April 1st, with January deadlines for the selective or numerous fixed programs which are Psychology, Business, PPLE, and Amsterdam University College. For Amsterdam University College—If applying for the Science major, AP Calc is required. For Social Science majors, AP Stats is required.  For Humanities a 600+ math SAT is required.

The University College has a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 and PPLE has a 3.3 requirement. The following programs require either AP Calc or Stats: Cultural Anthropology, Psychology, Politics Science, Economics, Actuarial Science, Business, Communications, Sociology, Econometrics, PPLE. There is also an option for a math entrance exam with the school.

What is student life like?

The UvA has four campuses located across Amsterdam. Some classes are in quaint old buildings overlooking the canals, others are in high-tech laboratories. Roeterseiland CampusThree faculties are housed at the Roeterseiland Campus: Economics and Business, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Law. CREA, the student cultural organization, is also located here.

Campus development: The UvA is working to consolidate its teaching and research activities across four campuses. At one time, we had about 85 different buildings scattered across Amsterdam. Many buildings didn't meet modern-day standards for teaching and research, and there weren't enough common areas to facilitate collaboration across disciplines. There's no end to the opportunities to engage in sports in Amsterdam, but the cheapest place for students and staff of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) to do so is at USC. There are also all sorts of student sports clubs you can join. The UvA also has a scheme for top-class athletes. The UvA student sports center is open seven days a week and is based in six locations spread across the city. They are located close to other UvA buildings and facilities wherever possible. There are four gyms, outdoor tennis courts, a yoga studio, climbing walls, and much more besides. You can choose from over 60 sports and various types of membership. Amsterdam has a thriving student community with various student associations. There are plenty of associations and activities for students to participate in alongside their studies.
