Mathematics is a multifaceted subject. Applied Mathematics focuses on using mathematics to model and simulatepractical situations. If you are interested in calculations that are placed in a technical context, this is the degree programme for you.Whereas the Mathematics degree is concerned with abstract matters, the emphasis in the Applied Mathematics programme is on the mathematics behind practical applications. One example is computing the flows of water, air or blood. Other examples are operating systems for robots, aeroplanes and satellites. The ability to think in an abstract way is still important – when you study Applied Mathematics, you also learn how to structure your reasoning and draw conclusions.

Applied physics is at the heart of society. It forms the basis for many of the products we use in daily life. The programme has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, with an emphasis on combinations of subjects: physics with design studies, nanotechnology, new materials and systems and control engineering.Applied physics involves studying not only how phenomena come about, but also how to use them for technical solutions. The programme focuses on theory and practice.Applied physics is an academic subject, which means that you acquire not only knowledge, but also skills such as presentation, working in a team and setting up and conducting research. We teach you critical appraisal skills, which you will learn to apply to your own and other's work.

The Art History Department in Groningen is unique because it combines the study of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and the history of landscapes, and examines the relationships between artwork, city and landscape. Our bachelor program offers a combination of historical, theoretical, and practice-based courses in which our international faculty collaborates with experts in the field. You are introduced to the professional field from the beginning. Art historians study artworks on-site. You will therefore go on excursions to Florence in your first year and to a large European metropolis like Berlin, London, or Vienna in your third year. The Department also organizes many excursions in the Netherlands

In the International Bachelor's degree programme in Artificial Intelligence you will study intelligence and develop intelligent and user-friendly products.This international degree programme focuses on human thinking, artificial thinking (computers, robots) and behavior in social systems (e.g. group behavior). You will study the underlying processes in order to predict or simulate behaviorArtificial Intelligence draws on knowledge from various disciplines, such as cognitive psychology, linguistics, computing science, logic and philosophy. You will develop skills in these areas in the first year, after which you deepen your knowledge in the subdiscipline you prefer, such as the technical aspects or cognitive science.There are many applications in which intelligence and usable technology are indispensable, in ticket machines for example. This degree programme therefore has a strong practical orientation.

What is the specific impact of newer audio-visual media upon individuals and culture? How do arts events contribute to our collective cultural memory, individual identity and sense of place? And, through recent processes of globalization, how does the transnational consolidation of the creative industries relate to the local organization, symbolic meaning and marketing of music, film and theater and their collective interpretation?These are some of the issues addressed by theFilm, Music, Theatre/ Performing and Audio-visual Artsdegree within the Arts, Culture, and Media Department for Dutch and international students who want to study the arts in an international and digitally mediated context. Because the international perspective, this innovative three-year English-language Bachelor's degree specifically highlights the prominent role of arts as interactive forms requiring multidisciplinary theoretical paradigms. To accomplish this, the programme offers both a specialization framework ( Analysis and Criticism or Policy and Marketing ) and in-depth study into three of the most dominant internationally mediated and interconnected artistic forms within sonic and visual cultures ( Music, FilmandTheatre). During the programme students acquire a fundamental understanding of the most relevant perspectives and methodologies for studying the arts as mediated processes including arts philosophy, arts cognition, media theory, arts aesthetics, and arts sociology. Because the programme develops a framework for thinking about the mediation of the arts in international contexts especially in a climate of increased competition and decreased funding, the themes of arts legitimization, globalization, digitalization, and intertextuality remain important issues from which to situate current patterns of evaluation, distribution, organization, and creativity.

Astronomy is about the universe, stars and planets. If you are interested in natural sciences, this international programme will appeal to you. You will study the physical processes in the universe, so physics and mathematics are also an important part of the programme.This international bachelor takes three years. If you find out that Astronomy is not really your thing, you still have the opportunity to switch in the first semester - to Physics, Applied Physics or Mathematics. That means you can never go wrong!Spectacular discoveries have been made in the field of astronomy in recent years, mainly because technological advances are making more and more things possible. In this international programme you can concentrate on the universe itself, or on developing and improving the instruments used to do this.The Groningen astronomers are among the best in the world. Research into astronomy has been carried out at the University since 1883. Astronomers from Groningen collaborated on the development of the HIFI instrument in the Herschel space telescope, and are also involved in the international LOFAR network of radio telescopes.

What are the effects of climate change on sea life? How does a disease like cancer arise? What happens in the brain when you are asleep?The field of Biology is concerned with how plants, animals and humans are made up and how they function. The difference with biology at secondary school is that this degree programme involves more science: you will study more mathematics, physics and chemistry.Scientists are expanding their horizons more and more. As a biologist, you will increasingly work together with scientists of other disciplines. This interaction will provide you with useful knowledge.Choose the specialization that suits you bestMany universities offer Biology degree programmes. The big advantage of studying in Groningen is that you can choose exactly the specialization that suits you best. The first semester covers basic topics that are essential for all fields of biology. After the first semester you can choose to follow the Major in Ecology and Evolution or the joint programme for the Majors in Molecular Life Sciences, Behaviour and Neurosciences, Biomedical Sciences or Integrative Biology. During the second year, these Majors will gradually start to differentiate. In the third year, you start with a Minor of one semester, in which you can either broaden or deepen your knowledge. In the last semester, you will complete your Bachelor’s programme with a Bachelor’s project in the specialism of your choice.All your lecturers are involved in research in some way. Their research will help you become acquainted with the many new developments in the field of life sciences.

Or to find safer solutions to treat patients?To realize future health care, biomedical engineers that are trained on the crossroad of engineering and medical and biological sciences are required. As a student, you will be trained to work in multidisciplinary teams, to have a broad overview, to create innovative devices and to perform research that forms a basis for better and more sustainable healthcare (in terms of costs and manpower). You will be both researcher and designer, the best basis for an academic professional.Real-life problemsYou will study topics in the field of imaging techniques (like MRI, PET,CT), robot design, prosthetics and orthotics, implants and artificial organs, tissue engineering and biomaterials, as well as aspects of medical ethics. During the programme, you will work on real-life problems, such as designing artificial heart valves that last longer, studying the process of joint implant ingrowth by bone, automatic analysis of MRI images to check for abnormalities.Different backgroundsYou will learn to communicate and collaborate with engineers, physicians, biologists and biochemists, all with different backgrounds. This is necessary for research and design of new diagnostic and therapeutic devices and techniques that are required in healthcare. In addition, you will also learn to focus on preventive devices and techniques to allow older citizens a healthy ageing; stay healthy as long as possible.

The fascinating thing about chemical engineering is that you're involved in developing new products but you're also thinking about the production process. A Chemical engineer is concerned with the entire development of a new product or processes, from A to Z. This means you will learn much more than just the how and why of chemical reactions. Chemical engineers at the University of Groningen, for example, have developed a highly efficient plastic solar cell and are now getting it ready for large-scale production. They are also working on the efficient extraction of biodiesel from the Indonesian jatropha plant and special rubbers for high-tech applications in clothing and footwear.The Dutch Education Guide hasranked Chemical Engineering in Groningen the number 1 of all similar programs in the Netherlands. Groningen is the only University where you can study both Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. If you find it hard to choose between a Bachelor's degree programme in chemistry or in chemical engineering, Groningen is the place to be. The first year of both programmes is identical so you don't have to make a definite choice until your second year. It's very likely that you don't yet know which specialisation to choose, so you won't have to decide until the second year.
