From the school:Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is an internationally renowned research university founded in 1880 . The university offers 98 English-taught programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level to 23,000 students from all over the world. Students and staff of 78 nationalities create a dynamic international academic community. The university is located in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, with the largest concentration of students in the Netherlands and where English is the second language spoken. The campus is surrounded by one of the most dynamic and fast-growing business districts in the Netherlands hosting over 700 companies. The university conducts cutting-edge research into problems of societal and scientific importance, of which about 3000 are international. The University distinguishes itself in research and education through four interdisciplinary themes: Human Health and Life Sciences, Science for Sustainability, Connected World; and Governance for Society. Student Life
There are study associations and student associations at VU. Study associations are connected to a student's department of study and offer academic and social opportunities. Student associations offer various clubs around sports, the arts, religion, Model UN, and international relations. For under 30 euros a month, students can join the VU Sports Centre. In addition to fitness facilities, classes are held for toning, aerobics, Zumba, pilates, yoga, boxing, kickboxing, ice skating, spinning, and sports (badminton, basketball, tennis, and volleyball). They are also home to 26 sports clubs.
Housing
The international office provides housing for international students for up to one year, but it is not guaranteed. Generally, if students apply by the deadlines given, they will receive a housing offer. Rooms are all singles with shared or private baths and range from 350-750 euros per month. Housing is located less than 5 minutes from campus by bike.

Notes
Unlike many European schools that have buildings throughout the city, all of the buildings for VU are situated together in a square in southern Amsterdam. The outdoor courtyard between the buildings is a popular place for students to gather when the weather is nice and is frequented by food trucks.
