It's generally just called "arts studies".
Anyone can look at a picture or sculpture and enjoy it. An art studies graduate, on the other hand, can probably notice a few indications of technique, speculate on the symbolic meaning of the piece, appreciate the specifics of composition, and even make an above-average replica if inspired.
In addition, depending on how they structured their course load, they are probably at least marginally competent in several other art forms. Most European and U.S. universities offer the following in addition to the visual arts of drawing and painting:
- Choreography and performing arts
- Digital design
Besides these, a student is typically introduced to the fields of art history, art criticism, aesthetics and art theory, curatorship, and arts management.
