A motivation letter is more than just a formality—it’s your opportunity to tell your story, explain your academic and career motivations, and demonstrate why you’re a strong fit for the program. In many European universities, especially for English-taught programs, this letter can carry significant weight in the admissions process—sometimes even more than your grades.
Important Note:
The motivation letter in Europe is not the same as the U.S.-style personal essay. It’s more focused on academic and professional alignment than storytelling or personal hardships. We’ll walk you through what to include—and what to leave out.
Exercise: Reflect on your personal and academic reasons for studying in Europe. Write down three experiences, skills, or goals you would include in your letter.
