Profile
Advanced programme of multidisciplinary study for graduates of landscape architecture, architecture and/or environmental design programmes. UCD Landscape Architecture offers Ireland’s only graduate degree programmes in Landscape Architecture, and our teaching staff includes some of the country’s top practitioners and academics. The MLA is a critical design-based programme that prepares students for juggling with the types of complex issues that are already affecting towns and cities in the Anthropocene, including in Ireland, where questions of climate change, sea level rise, flooding, biodiversity and habitat loss meet weak planning, polluting practices, sprawl, poor housing and inadequate systems of public transport. Our site-based approach seeks to understand the types of cultural, political, ecological, spatial and environmental conditions and processes that affect the quality of modern life. Lessons learnt from real-life Irish case studies can be applied elsewhere in the world, and we equip graduates with the skills required to contribute to an essentially multidisciplinary approach to the design of greener, healthier, happier and more sustainable urban communities. Recognizing the wide range of contemporary landscape topics present in this rapidly changing world, our structure allows students to select subjects corresponding with individual interests. Our approach requires each individual to contribute personal expertise to the studio team as we seek to expand the traditional boundaries of the discipline.
