Oestrich-Winkel is located in the middle of the Rheingau, about 20 km west of the Hessian state capital of Wiesbaden and 50 km west of the metropolis of Frankfurt. The city was formed in the 70s of the 20th century from the well-known wine towns of Oestrich, Mittelheim, Winkel, and Hallgarten. Oestrich-Winkel is the heart of the famous Rheingau wine-growing region and is home to around 70 wineries. Many of them are internationally known. Their wines can be found on the wine lists of top gastronomic destinations worldwide. One of the oldest wineries in the world, Schloss Vollrads, is one of them. There are over 100 farms in Oestrich-Winkel, which cultivate a total of almost 900 hectares. The vast majority of them are small and very small businesses with less than 10 hectares.
In the city center, there are important sights such as the Basilica of St. Giles from the 10th century in Mittelheim or the Gothic St. Martin's Church in Oestrich.
In Winkel, the “Graue Haus” from the 12th century, which is considered to be the oldest, inhabitable stone house in Germany, and the house of the von Brentano family, in which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was once a guest, have a special place. The town's landmark is the historic wine-loading crane on the banks of the Rhine from 1745. To the north of Winkel, at a high altitude, lies Vollrad Castle, the only preserved moated castle in the Rheingau. A cultural and historical gem, the Schröter Mother of God from around 1417, can be found in the local parish church in Hallgarten.
