Profile
When you study Energy Engineering, you can choose the study programme in Advanced Power Electronics (APEL) at Aalborg University Esbjerg. In this programme, you will study advanced power electronics, electrical machines with strong focus on control engineering, optimisation and reliability, and integrating renewable energy systems for application sectors. You will study these topics analytically, numerically and experimentally in an innovative research environment. This study programme combines contemporary technologies with adaptation from classic technologies such as electronics, power electronics, electrical machines, control engineering with artificial intelligence, reliability and maintenance issues. This gives you an understanding of the technologies, scientific background involved in the advanced power electronic areas, and its application in systems level studies in a real time environment.Studying the APEL programme, you learn how to model numerically using advanced software, analyse, synthesise and develop advanced power electronic systems level studies with theoretical background. Further, you will gain the knowledge how power electronics and drives interact with externally connected components or systems. You will work with and explore topics such as:Off-shore wind turbine converters and control dynamicsPower electronic control of underwater robotics used in particular for inspection and maintenance operationsDiagnostic of power electronic and electrical machine installationsOptimum control dynamics of drivesControl of renewable energy systemsElectric propulsion systems for electric ships and vehicles – (More Electric Vehicles technologies)Design of intelligent drone systems for inspection and maintenanceDesign of intelligent control for robotic manipulator systemsCondition monitoring and maintenance of power electronic and electrical machine systemsReliability analysis of power electronics and power systemsYou are to create a functional block diagram of the system you have selected to work on and you may also test your system with a systematic approach for validation and verification.Experimental work plays a key role in the study programme. A large, well-equipped laboratory is available with software and hardware setups. It offers you unique and excellent opportunities to explore methods and possibilities for constructing and testing prototype models of advanced power electronic systems and electric machines with advanced digital control techniques, studying diagnostics issues and reliability of the systems. In your semester projects, you and your project group will work with relevant issues within the programme’s field of study, that challenge you to use all of your knowledge and adapt skills to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to collaborate with external organisations, and Aalborg University industrial business partners to explore your skills with industrial real life problems, and creating platform for job opportunities.
