Profile
The academic discipline known as aesthetics explores a wide spectrum of questions ranging from the role of art in society, the nature and significance of beauty, the foundations of art criticism, and more. Studied from a philosophical perspective, aesthetics aims to provide a set of tools for thinking precisely and rigorously about issues and problems in a variety of domains to do with the arts, aesthetic experience and culture more broadly.WHY THIS PROGRAMME?The Master Programme in the Humanities offered by the internationally recognised Philosophy Department at Uppsala University is a two year course leading to a Master of Arts (120 credits) degree in Aesthetics. The Master Programme is also available as a one year, 60 credit degree, although it is expected that the majority of students will choose the full two year version. Uppsala University’s International Master’s is unique and provides an exciting set of opportunities for undergraduates who wish to further deepen their academic training. The first year of study is built around compulsory components (including a research seminar). Students concurrently take elective courses, some of which are intensive master classes offered by renowned international visiting scholars. There are opportunities to take such courses not only at Uppsala but also at other Swedish universities. Students will develop an individual study plan with the convener of the Master’s programme and will be assigned a supervisor in preparation for writing a thesis during the second year of the course. The second year of the course comprises a special semester long course for Master’s students developing their research. Students will continue to take elective courses and begin work on their thesis. The second semester is dedicated to thesis writing and culminates in the thesis defense. The structure of this course mirrors closely that of a Swedish doctoral degree and will provide excellent preparation for students thinking of continuing their studies at the doctoral level in Sweden or elsewhere, in addition to those who plan to terminate their studies at the Master’s level. The department is able to offer specialised supervision in a wide a range of subject areas within Aesthetics and Philosophy. In addition to Aesthetics, the Philosophy Department also has significant strengths in Practical Philosophy (including Applied Ethics and the Philosophy of Law), Theoretical Philosophy (including the Philosophy of Language and Philosophy of Science), the History of Philosophy, and the Philosophy of Anthropology.
