Profile
The Master’s degree program American Studies combines the traditional study of American literature with recent cultural-scientific approaches. The subject thus covers not only the history of American literature from the colonial era to the present, but also a large number of cultural testimonies, which are only a part of traditional literary studies. The subject is devoted to the most diverse forms of American culture, with their heterogeneity, their ethnic differences, and their political self-understanding centered on standardization. The subject takes account of the diversity of the experiences of reality in a multiethnic America and, in doing so, lays the mark from literary texts on documents of political rhetoric to products of popular culture.
