Profile
The Master’s Programme in Chemistry, specialising in Bio and Nano Materials, provides you with cutting-edge expertise through in-depth studies in the field of Bio and Nano materials. The studies combine theoretical knowledge and practical skills in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical biology, as well as materials chemistry. You will also study the chemical and physical properties of soft materials applied to, e.g., medical applications. The Master’s Programme in Chemistry, specialising in Bio and Nano Materials, has strong links to world leading research in this field. It is a unique specialisation at Uppsala University and you will have leading experts in, e.g. tissue engineering and biomaterials as teachers, and have the opportunity to do your degree project in a dynamic and world-class research environment, either at the university or in a private company. The course content also includes the chemical and physical properties of soft materials, applied to, e.g., medical applications. This is a major growth area and you will learn more about tissue engineering, soft functional materials, both on the nanoscale as well bulk properties and materials for drug transport and delivery, etc.During the programme you can expect to:get a personal mentor who helps you prepare for your future careergain access to advanced research instrumentsa university with two Nobel prizes in chemistryThe courses show the cross-disciplinary aspect of this highly active field. You will have courses in biomaterials, as well as in surface and colloid chemistry and in organic chemistry. The wide range of applications are also seen in the course in nanobiotechnology which are followed by a course dealing with both the mechanical properties of soft materials as well as conducting polymers and polymer electrolytes, where the applications range from solar cells to medical devices. You will also have a course in Bioengineering: Biomaterials and Design. To give you even further experience in working in a research group, you can also choose a course in Research training which will further develop your theoretical knowledge and experimental skills.A degree from Uppsala University will give you close connection to excellent and world leading research and you will have the opportunity to develop a personal contact network. You will have a personal mentor who will invite you to seminars, group-meetings and other events in order to prepare you for your future career and you will meet PhD-students and post-docs who have come to Uppsala to be part of an excellent research environment to do cutting-edge research. Our research groups have a well-developed cooperation with other institutions and research agencies which is beneficial for you when choosing a project for the Master’s thesis, and to make contacts for your future career.Uppsala University is also part of the SciLifeLab which can offer suitable projects for those interested in the field of bio- and nanomaterials. In the Uppsala region, there are also several large or small companies and research agencies where you can find interesting projects, which will further add to your contact network.Student profileYou are probably coming directly from your Bachelor’s degree or have had a relevant job to strengthen your analytical and not least your experimental skills. In any case you have not forgotten too much of your broad chemistry base. Your university was well equipped with experimental facilities so you have good practical training working in a lab, and can select relevant methods and stay safe while doing experimentsYou have an analytical mind and are able and willing to express your thoughts in both writing and speaking. You are extremely motivated and willing to take the responsibility needed to successfully complete your studies.A PhD education is a distinct possibility in your future so you would value coming into contact with current research and prominent researchers in the respective international field.
