The MSc Biobased Sciences focuses on the transition from a petrochemical to a biobased economy. At the moment most materials and energy are produced from fossil fuels, but a rapid replacement by biomass is required. This is needed, since the number of people in the world is growing and major changes in the way we deal with food, animal feed, materials and energy are required. There are four main aspects that are integrated to come to this transition, namely economic, technical, social and environmental aspects. The programme includes interdisciplinary design of biobased production chains including biomass production, bioconversion, biorefinery and societal, logistic and economic transition processes. During this Master you will learn how to assess opportunities and challenges of a biobased economy. The main challenge is to work on improving resource efficiency and the use of land in order to meet all these needs, while not forgetting climate, biodiversity, land use, recreation and societal issues.The Master’s Biobased Sciences is a two-year programme. In the first year you will start with two foundation courses: Biobased Economy and Circular Economy. These courses focus on important aspects when designing a biobased and/or circular economy. During this year you will also follow the course Academic Consultancy Training. The rest of the courses in the first year you can choose yourself, partly within your chosen specialisation.The second year of the Master will consist of a master thesis and an internship at one of the thesis groups that fits your specialisation.-Biomass Production and Carbon CaptureThis specialisation focuses on the knowledge of plant physiology and development, genetics and breeding, and plant biotechnology for biomass production. Biomass can be produced in the field, in greenhouses, in the sea as well as in forests. Several social, environmental, economic and technical aspects will determine which crops are most suitable for which applications and how you can grow them in the best way.-Biorefinery and ConversionThis specialisation focuses on the processing steps needed to produce chemicals, biopolymers, feed or renewable energy from biomass. Engineering is fully integrated with process technology, physical-, organic- and biochemistry, product quality and process requirements. All those fields play an important role when designing a biorefinery.-Biobased and Circular EconomyThis specialisation focuses on economic aspects to enable the transition from a petrochemical to a biobased economy. This includes resource management, logistics, closing of energy, water and nutrient cycles, policy, biobased business and sustainability analysis methods.

Admissions Requirements
A bachelor's degree in a related field is required. Undergraduate GPA is evaluated and typical requires at least a 3.0/3.3 average. Admission Deadline: May 1
