Profile
This programme is designed to equip students with the modern research and study techniques essential to successful completion of postgraduate degree work. The course is full time and lasts four semesters. The approach that is adopted is student-centred, with staff seen as advisers and facilitators, as well as tutors. It is expected that students will work on their own, in pairs, and in groups in order to supplement the materials provided during tuition time. There is considerable importance placed on the students’ own (guided) research work: it is hoped that this increased responsibility for their learning will also allow students to have a greater involvement in input, task and materials selection, and course outcomes. The course is designed to be the platform from which students may develop analytical techniques which may be applied to a number of disciplines and to any society. These techniques would correspond to those enumerated at the Strathclyde University conference on Materials Evaluation, and are taken from linguistic, literary, anthropological, ethnographical and film theory, and would include semiotic analysis, discourse analysis, genre analysis, register analysis, interview techniques, observation techniques etc. It is to be hoped that the critical awareness developed during the course will be applicable and relevant to diverse professions, from teaching, journalism and business management through to politics, economics and the diplomatic field.
