Profile
Computer Science is a young science at the interface between mathematics and engineering and natural sciences. It has an interdisciplinary character and deals with the possibilities of processing, storage, transmission, presentation and use of information from a scientific and technical perspective. Computer science develops information and communication technologies for science, business and society, which increasingly penetrate our everyday life and change our lives. Innovative IT solutions are the key to further technical advances. Computer Science presents a variety of challenges and offers numerous opportunities to analyze complex problems, to develop clever technical solutions and to make the world responsible in a responsible and creative way.The study of computer science at the University of Basel is a study of natural sciences and offers an application-oriented, modern computer science education with a well-founded mathematical basic knowledge. It offers its graduates the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a broad career field in business and administration, but also provides the theoretical tools for an entry into the research. During their studies, students learn to systematically analyze problems and develop solutions using information and communication technologies on their own. The team work as well as the presentation of IT solutions. At the University of Basel, computer science research focuses on two areas: Distributed Systems and Machine Intelligence . In the Distributed Systems division , the focus is on the design and further development of devices such as programs for high-performance computer networks, whose elements are located in different locations, even on different continents. Research scientists in the field of machine intelligence develop and optimize autonomous decision-making systems for the planning and prediction of future events or states. Both areas are being worked on by several research groups and are given particular attention in teaching.
