Profile
Scientific computations are today a naturally integrated, invaluable part of the subject mechanics and simulations are used in everything from investigations of basic mysteries like turbulence to concrete applications such as strength calculations in constructions. New applications such as coupled multi-physics and multi-scale problems, biomedical applications, and big data analysis put new requirements for the mastery and understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of computations.Examples of applications in mechanics are freak waves on the ocean that can be devastating to ships, construction and safety of ships and oil platforms, snow-avalance forecast, energy and environmental engineering such as optimization of wind turbine installations, or new treatments and diagnostics of health problems such as treating heart attacks, stroke or Alzheimer’s disease. Common to all the problems is modeling using partial differential equations that describe liquids, gas, solids, and the interactions between them. Often simulations on supercomputers are essential. Also for laboratory experiments, computations on large computers are an important part of the big-data analysis.
