The disciplines of ecology and evolution research elements, structures, functions and changes in our living environment. Preservation, protection and sustainable use of biodiversity and other natural resources require knowledge of ecological and evolutionary processes and their further research. This includes, for example, knowledge of the interrelationships between organisms and their environment as well as an understanding of the adaptation-related differentiation of species, populations and individuals in a wide variety of characteristics (genetic, ecological, morphological, physiological, developmental-reproductive) on different spatial and temporal scales.
