Profile
The master’s program Human Geography: Globalisation, Media and Culture focuses on renegotiating geographical relations between culture and society in the course of globalization processes. Emphasis is placed on the following questions: How has the connection between culture, space and society that is communicated by the media been transformed in the global age, what challenges have arisen, and how can these problems be dealt with politically? In the context of a general spatial turn, media-sensitive cultural geography is a key discipline. As communication equipment is continuing to be miniaturized and mobilized, and we are experiencing a huge surge in mapping and geo-coded positioning in all areas of life, a new form of a-whereness” is arising, meaning we are developing a completely renewed interest in spaces, regions and places. The geographical media content of the program is therefore devoted to empirically analyzing media-generated geographies and to socio-technically rearranging the relationship between space and media. On the basis of their initial academic qualifications (such as a bachelor’s degree), students will develop advanced scientific analytical skills throughout the master’s program. Students will have to complete versatile and innovative module exams, including making short films, podcasts and blogs. This will ensure that they also develop practical skills while creating these media products. The degree program will appeal to graduates of all social and cultural disciplines who are interested in geography and in receiving a basic education in current cultural and theoretical approaches to the relationship between space and society and who are keen to deal with the current phenomena of global society in their own research projects.
