Grand challenges such as those that we are contemporary facing; climate change, food security or poverty alleviation, require new technical solutions, new social configurations, new economic models and eventually, new socio-economic and technical transformations. At the macro-economic level, long growth waves can be explained by technological revolutions that change industrial structures and shape political economies. They are characterized by new actors, new constellations of networks and new institutions that shape new technological paradigms. At micro level, these processes are shaped by the behavior of entrepreneurs and other organizations in continuous learning process. But innovation is not only about the grand revolutions and the long wave changes. It is also about the diffusion of those innovations and incremental changes that yield economic, social and environmental benefits for society. In this course you will learn the dynamics of both macro and micro economics of innovation. You will get insights into how innovations are shaped by history in a path-dependent way as well as by the spatial context.
