The aim of the course is to develop a solid basis in Linguistics as a framework for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) which can then be applied to EFL teaching and/or to an examination of the linguistic specificities of spoken and written EFL at a national and global level.The course aims to provide a sound theoretical background which can then easily be developed and applied to students’ specific scientific interests and goals. The general objectives of the Master’s Degree in Linguistics for EFL Teachers are:To revise and consolidate key Linguistics concepts raging from Semantics to Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics and CLA (Critical Language Awareness) to develop and examine a metalanguage to apply to EFL description and teachingto develop and examine language awareness applied to EFL teaching and learningto examine language, language teaching and language learning as social practicesto identify and examine the pramalinguistic interference processes which bear direct influence in the practice of spoken and written EFL, particularly amongst speakers of Portuguese L1. Some practical examples: – the use of pro-drop in EFL sentences – the transference of L1 sociopragmatic rules to EFL usage (the usage of third person as a form of address, for example) – the direct transference of complex grammatical structures such as indirect speech and the passive voice to EFL usageWith the aforementioned aim of endowing students with a sound theoretical background in Linguistics which will then enable the pursuit of specific interests, the course offers a range of subjects covering different aspects of Linguistics and EFL.
