Profile
The degree course is oriented towards advanced sections of mathematical physics and applied mathematics. Graduates will be motivated to apply the knowledge acquired to theoretical physics targeted at rigorous mathematical processes and methods, to theoretical analysis and description of physical models for experimentally-oriented disciplines of physics, to natural and engineering sciences, making use of modern computational facilities. The courses stress a thorough knowledge of disciplines of mathematics and physics and provide an overview of the state of the art of mathematical and theoretical physics. The curriculum comprises individually tailored student research projects. They help students orient themselves in their respective specialization and often result in original findings publishable in international professional periodicals. The core courses of the curriculum comprise: quantum mechanics and field theory, classical and quantum theory of gravity, statistical physics, differential geometry and topology, theory of Lie groups, theory of Lie algebras and their representations, functional analysis, and spectral theory of operators. The degree course programme is designed for exceptionally talented, academically and well-motivated students willing to study hard and embark on an academic career.
