Profile
The main goal of the Master’s degree Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBC) is to train biologists in the field of advanced bio-molecular research and to enable them to face present and future challenges in this field.Specific goal of MBC is to provide in depth and up-to-date knowledge in the following subjects: molecular genome analysis; regulation of gene expression; structure and function of biological macromolecules and their interaction in supramolecular complexes; cellular communication, signal perception and transduction, metabolic regulation, bio-molecular engineering and computing. The focus will be on theoretical as well as on practical aspects of bio-molecular research. The aim is to train graduate students to apply novel and emerging research technologies/approaches, ultimate data acquisition systems and analysis, as well as to experience frontier research in emerging research areas joining the laboratories of the Department of Biosciences. MBC graduates will be perfectly suited for entering a PhD school for advanced education. The duration of the Master’s degree program MBC is two years, each year is subdivided in two Semesters.120 educational credits (CFU) are required to complete the master’s degree program. Each credit corresponds to a standard student workload of 25 hours. In the first year (I and II semester) the student will acquire credits by following at least the 8 distinctive courses; 6 CFU can be acquired by a short lab experience (see below). During the second year, the workload is centered on the experimental research activity related to the thesis (42 CFU in total, acquired upon thesis defense) and on one course on laboratory methods (9 CFU).
