Profile
South Asian Culture and Society (SACS) gives you a unique opportunity to develop your understanding of modern South Asia, and to anchor your studies in empirical research and theoretical analysis, under the guidance of leading scholars in the field. The teaching and supervision at SACS is built around our faculty’s research on issues such as religious pluralism, democratic participation, social movements, cultural heritage, gender, and Hindi literature. As a master student you will be part of this dynamic research environment.Through teaching and close supervision you will be introduced to the methodologies you need to study a case or topic from South Asia, and to theories that will help you put your case in a larger context. Your comparative skills will be honed in conversation with Middle Eastern culture and society; later, you will choose courses that enable you to explore topics close to your own interests and area of specialization. To develop your intercultural competence and give you first-hand experience from South Asia we encourage our students to spend one semester abroad: experience working in a team in a South Asian company or institution study at an Indian university, or gain an intimate understanding of particular places and people through long-term fieldwork.Whether you plan to work in a South Asia related field or aspire to become a research scholar, SACS will equip you with the skills you need to understand one of the most complex and important regions in the world. SACS will help you develop invaluable skills in advanced reading, planning and execution of an individual project, writing, and analysis of complex material.
