Profile
Have you always wanted to deepen your knowledge of Anglophone cultures and perfect your English language skills? Then the study programme in English Language and Culture is a good match for you!
Nearly a billion people use English in their everyday communication. Approximately 400 million are native English speakers, which makes English a true world language. A thorough understanding of its cultures and histories will allow you to engage with people on a global scale.
Perfecting your English is one aim, but you also learn how the language actually works as a linguistic system, how the processes of learning English in the brain are different for children and adults, and how and why the language has changed over time and is used differently depending on location, or social factors like age, gender and self-identity. You also explore the language by analysing thought-provoking literature. English after all is the language of many world-famous authors past and present. You study the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world and the influences of cultural, social and political developments on the English language and its literatures and vice versa.
You will learn how to modify your pronunciation towards either a British or American standard accent. We see this as a useful skill, but at the same time the degree takes a World Englishes approach to the language.
