Why should I study here?

The University of Ostrava (UO), with over 10,000 students, offers a very high quality level of education and research in the humanities, social and natural sciences, health studies, medicine, and the fine arts. Its 6 faculties (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Social Studies, Pedagogical Faculty) offer an extremely wide range of fields of study as well as unconventional combinations of majors. As well as being dynamic and intellectually challenging, UO also offers an international environment in which to study, with the university campus spread primarily throughout the old city centre, providing a stimulating environment to contemplate the living arts and sciences. Teaching at UO is research-driven, and its programmes are often taught by active researchers. The university also proudly presents itself as a university full of leading figures in their fields of expertise who are not only scientists but also inspirational and open-minded personalities with a vivid sense of creativity.

What are the admissions criteria?

All applicants, including native English speakers, must take the entrance exam which assesses English linguistic abilities, reading comprehension, and culture, history, and literature as it relates to English-speaking countries. The application deadline is until the end of February.

What is student life like?

Our campus is the city of Ostrava; housed within recently renovated historical buildings or newly built structures, our faculties, library, and administrative buildings are spread throughout the city. Excellent public transportation or bike rental means you will be commuting with Czech office workers, school kids, and others going about their daily routines. In-between your student commute are many cafes and restaurants in which to contemplate the arts and sciences. The city is at your disposal. Body-Energy–Movement is the name of our student fitness program (in Czech, TEP: Tlo–Energie–Pohyb). Available to the entire academic community (students and employees), access to fitness facilities and sports are significantly less expensive and, in some cases, free of charge.

There are countless different sports in the TEP program and this offer is constantly updated according to both the interest and the season. For example, throughout the year you can play squash or improve on your yoga, in winter, ski and snowboard courses are available and water sports exist in the summer. The number one club for our international students is the Erasmus Student Network of Ostrava. This group of dedicated volunteers creates weekly programs for you to get to know other students, learn about Czech culture and share your own. This community will be the first to embrace you as you get adjusted to your new environment.
