Profile
With the unique programme in Global Archaeology at Leiden University you will explore the archaeological past of Europe, the Mediterranean and West Asia, or the Americas. You address the impact of global developments on the area of your choice. The courses prepare you for a career as a regional archaeologist in consultancies, local governments or museums.
With Global Archaeology you will reflect on the relationship between the local, the regional, and the global. Following your personal interests you will choose one of our main research areas: the Mediterranean and West Asia, Europe, or the Americas. Additionally, you will gain a global perspective on the area of your choice, shaping you into an area specialist with a global frame of mind.
Within this framework, the programme allows you to follow your personal interests and goals. Two additional courses on regional archaeology offer even more specialisation in a region. Other elective courses are offered on archaeological science, heritage, or museum studies. Or do an internship in the area of your choice. After graduation you will be uniquely equipped for an archaeological career.
Your thesis is the crowning achievement of your studies: a research project in which you show that you are capable of conducting archaeological research in the region of your choice and reflecting on its role in human history.
