The Master’s Programme in Creative Sustainability combines business, architecture, built environment and design to help you learn how to create new sustainable solutions.Programme overviewThe Creative Sustainability programme (CS) provides a multidisciplinary learning platform in the fields of business, architecture, built environment and design. It allows students to study and develop solutions to global sustainability concerns such as climate change, resource scarcity, global poverty as well as social and economic inequality.The global and local challenges increasingly require a multidisciplinary approach as well as education that can address the linkages between the environmental, the economic and the socio-cultural. The CS programme brings together students who are devoted to developing systemic solutions, working in multidisciplinary teams and challenging themselves with practical learning tasks. The studies offer students opportunities to collaborate with research projects, companies, organisations and students from other disciplines.The international Master’s Programme in Creative Sustainability is a joint master’s degree programme of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, the School of Business and the School of Engineering. The CS students who enter the programme via the School of Business admissions will graduate with a degree of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration.The students who enter the CS programme through the School of Business gain knowledge of developing sustainability in business through management, leadership and innovation. They are expected to provide creative input into problem solving in multidisciplinary teams and challenge others with insights which draw on profound understanding of sustainability in the global context, different interpretations of sustainability in business and innovation studies.Learning outcomesMultidisciplinary approach: developing capabilities in adapting knowledge, skills and new approaches to reach collaborative solutions based on ecological, economical and socio-cultural sustainability.Systems approach: integrating analytic and systemic thinking to problem-solve and create new holistic understandings of complex situations and the critical infrastructures of society. The emphasis is on global awareness within the context of local communities and simultaneous modification of different aspects of sustainability.Design thinking: enhancing creative problem solving capabilities that utilise the methods of the design process to define problems, generate ideas and arrive at solutions.Project management: learning to manage multidisciplinary teamwork, and to promote sustainability in culturally diverse organisational environments.Business management: developing new approaches and skills for creating sustainable business models and improvement of business ethics and corporate responsibility.Upon graduating from the programme, you will be able to:understand the role of different stakeholdersanalyse sustainability problems and engage with them in a constructive wayuse participatory design methodsdemonstrate excellent communication skillsknow how different business models and organisational forms are being used to support sustainabilityunderstand what the role of explicit commitments to corporate social responsibility isWhat do you study in CS?The Creative Sustainability programme comprises classroom lessons, group assignments, workshops, practical projects and a thesis. Courses deepen the basis for professional skills in sustainability in the business context. Contents of the projects vary from material innovation to enhancement of social sustainability. Courses and projects are carried out within topics of interest for partner organisations that can be e.g. private companies, NGOs or other associations or public organisations.The two-year Master’s Programme consists of 120 ECTS composed of compulsory studies of the Creative Sustainability programme, compulsory Management studies and elective studies including a minor subject. The curriculum is based on personal study plans, in which the students can also include studies completed at other universities or other modules from Aalto University. The pedagogical approach is based on integrating teaching and research, problem-based learning, and a strong connection to practical outcomes.
