The subjects of the English and American Studies master’s course are the English language, its description and analysis in the context of current research, as well as the research-related investigation of Anglophone literatures and cultures from the Middle Ages to the present day. The course offers extensive freedom of choice. The subject can be studied in all its breadth, but there are also opportunities to specialize in the areas of linguistics or literary and cultural studies. One focus is on demanding practical language training, which requires a high level of foreign language skills right from the start of the course.The range of courses in literary and cultural studies is enriched through cooperation with other institutes. The collaborations include the Institute for German Linguistics, the Institute for German Literature, the Historical Institute and the Institute for Geography.The MA English / American Studies qualifies you for academic professional profiles, for responsible higher positions at the interfaces between business, culture and the public sector as well as for professional fields in which special linguistic and communicative skills and intercultural experience are required (such as in internationally oriented companies, Institutions, libraries and archives, digital media as well as in publishing and press). In addition, you can deepen your academic qualifications by completing a doctoral degree in the humanities and/or cultural sciences.
