Profile
The master’s program in International Organizations and Crisis Management is the only program in Germany and one of the few in Europe that focuses on the following three areas. First, you will get to know the goals, tasks, structures, cultures and norms of international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Second, you will become familiar with the possibilities and limits of international crisis management, by which we mean pacifying violent conflicts, but also dealing with pandemics, migration flows, natural disasters or financial crises. Thirdly, we address whether and how international organizations (together with states and other actors) can cope with these crises, which effectiveness and legitimacy problems arise and how international organizations sometimes get themselves into crisis. The program comprises two basic areas: a core area and a supplementary area. The core area consists of compulsory courses that impart key skills in international organizations and crisis management. It also includes a seminar by practitioners, an excursion to the headquarters of international organizations and a summer school on crisis management. The supplementary area consists of interdisciplinary study components and language courses. As part of the interdisciplinary study components at our university and our partner universities in Erfurt, Halle and Leipzig you can choose courses from other sub-areas of political science and from related disciplines (e.g. law and economics). In the language area, you will learn a language of your choice that is relevant in international organizations. International students who do not speak German well are recommended to learn German. You decide for yourself whether the focus is on language studies or on interdisciplinary courses. The third semester takes place at one of our international partner universities. A stay at partner universities in Germany is also possible, especially for international students. A two-month internship is also planned for this semester. The fourth semester is reserved for the master’s thesis.
