The master’s degree course in history at the VU trains you to become a professional historian. The course is broad-based and also allows you to specialise in a particular area of history. All students follow a number of basic subjects. In addition you choose the broad master’s curriculum or one of the specialisations. If you decide to follow the broad master’s curriculum then you make your own choice from the other subjects offered. Each specialisation is based on one of the chairs of the History Department. The progress of your study is personally mentored by a member of the academic staff. Some specialisations are completely in English; others are in Dutch, but with some lectures in English.In addition to the broad master’s course, the master’s degree course in history offers the following specialisations: -Global History and International Studies: Learn about global history and flows of people, goods and ideasThe MA specialisation History: Global History and International Studies is a unique programme combining approaches from history and the social sciences.The History department of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has a long tradition in teaching and researching global relations and international history. Special areas of attention are economic, colonial and postcolonial relations between Western countries and the postcolonial world – including Africa and Southeast Asia.We also focus on the relations between Europe and the US in the wider context of the Atlantic world and the global impact of changes in Asia and China.-Medical and Health Humanities: Learn to situate medical knowledge in its historical contextHistory: Medical and Health Humanities is a unique interdisciplinary specialisation that is taught in English. You will combine the history of health and medicine with a wide array of approaches in the arts and humanities.The courses are relevant for students interested in the history of health and medicine, as well as for health professionals. You follow the full master’s programme History or you can take just the specialisation courses as secondary courses.-Religion and Society: Learn about the historical relations between religion and societyThe MA specialisation programme History: Religion and Society focusses on understanding the changing role of religion(s) in society from Antiquity until the present. You will explore questions such as:How has the relationship between religion, politics and society changed over time?How can we understand the gradual separation of Church and State and new forms of worship, dissent and devotion that have developed since the western Middle Ages?What has been the impact of broader processes such as secularisation, globalisation and colonialism?

Admissions Requirements
A bachelor's degree in a related field is required. Applicants from non-anglophone countries must provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 100 and IELTS 7.0). Admission Deadline: April 1
