Profile
The Master programme in International Humanitarian and Criminal Law provides an opportunity to get an in-depth understanding of these two interrelated areas of international law. While international humanitarian law (or the law of armed conflict) determines limitations and specifications for methods and means of warfare, protection of civilians and treatment of soldiers who are hors de combat or captured etc., international criminal law provides a system for prosecution and punishment of violations of these rules. In other words, international humanitarian law contains the substance of the rules pertaining to conduct in armed conflict, while international criminal law provides the procedural framework for bringing such cases to trial, including rules on jurisdiction, general principles of criminal law such as criminal liability and complicity. The Masters programme in International Criminal and Humanitarian Law is a 1 1/2-year programme that provides an opportunity for studies of the basic rules of international public law. In addition, the program gives them the opportunity to focus their studies on areas of particular interest through classes, seminars, and the writing of a master’s thesis. Three courses are mandatory, and students one elective course from a list of available courses. The courses offer a context-based approach which highlights linkages between the national, regional, and international levels. In addition, the Faculty offers an exciting series of international public law lunches, guest lectures, and seminars highlighting national and international scholars and practitioners.
