The Master Programme in Public International Law with programme option Environmental and Energy Law will provide students with a thorough understanding of the interconnected fields of international climate law and the regulation of climate friendly energy.While international climate law primarily deals with obligations of states to curb greenhouse gas emissions and to finance an equitable and effective adaptation system, is energy law concerned with domestic regulatory issues related to renewable energy sources.This course will cover the foundations, sources and principles of international climate and energy law. Particular emphasis will be on the following principles: Common But Differentiated responsibility, Sustainable development, Precautionary Principle, Polluter Pays principle, and Sovereignty. Moreover, students will learn about regulation, implementation, enforcement and non-compliance procedures in both fields. With respect to climate change law, particular emphasis will be on the main legal issues related to the international climate change regime (in particular the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol).In the field of renewable energy regulation, the course covers legal questions with respect to access to natural resources, energy production, transportation and supply and consumption patterns. Finally, students will be introduced to cross-cutting issues, such as the relationship between rules pertaining to energy security, sustainable development, trade and human rights.The course will mainly have public international law components, but will also include comparative studies, which highlight fundamental parallels/differences in terms of law principles, enforcement and regulatory techniques.The Masters programme in Public International Law with programme option International Environmental and Energy Law is a 1 1/2-year programme that provides an opportunity for studies of the basic rules of international public law. In addition, the program gives them the opportunity to focus their studies on areas of particular interest through classes, seminars, and the writing of a master’s thesis. Three courses are mandatory, and students one elective course from a list of available courses.The courses offer a context-based approach which highlights linkages between the national, regional, and international levels. In addition, the Faculty of Law offers an exciting series of international public law lunches, guest lectures, and seminars highlighting national and international scholars and practitioners.
