Profile
The aim of the interdisciplinary master’s degree in the field of medical photonics is to prepare you for a science-based and research-oriented career in the field of medical optics and photonics or to lay the foundation for further training programs inside or outside the university with the specialist training. In the course you will acquire in-depth knowledge of theory, methodology and systematics from sub-areas of biology, medicine, mathematics, chemistry and physics, the experimental skills required for scientific work in the field of medical photonics, as well as special training in selected areas microscopy, spectroscopy and diagnostics as well as in current clinical applications of photonic techniques. The interdisciplinary course is aimed at people from the natural sciences as well as life sciences and medicine. In order to complement the different training of these courses, at the beginning of the course you will take modules that expand your knowledge of human biology or physics and chemistry. The courses and research internships are designed on an interdisciplinary basis by the medical, chemical-geoscientific and physical-astronomical faculties as well as by non-university institutes. The course will enable you to use and further develop optical methods in biomedical research and clinical application. This means that you can take up a doctoral degree in this area as well as work in technology-oriented companies in the optics, medical technology and life science sectors, for which an enormous demand for skilled workers is forecast in the coming years. For licensed doctors, the master’s course can be the prerequisite for the double qualification for MD / PhD.
