Profile
The aim of this master’s degree is to prepare students for a career in the fields of optics and optical technologies or to lay the foundation for further training programs inside or outside the university with the specialist training. The students acquire in-depth knowledge of experimental and theoretical optics as well as special training in several sub-areas of optics. All lectures and seminars are held in English. 3 internships each in the first three semesters and the master’s thesis project provide a strong practical focus. The internships and the master’s thesis can be completed in an institute of the faculty, in a non-university scientific institute or in a research-related company. Students from around 25 nations come together each year in this course and intercultural competence is acquired as a matter of course. Excursions to partner companies, specialist career fairs, application training, etc. are implemented in the program. The career prospects for graduates of the M.Sc. Photonics are excellent. Due to the shortage of skilled workers in this industry, students often even receive one or more job offers before completing their studies. Graduates of the program are suitable for challenging and technically demanding jobs in industry in the fields of optics, photonics and laser technologies. Alternatively, they can pursue a scientific career, for example starting a doctorate at the Abbe School of Photonics. Due to the international nature of the study program, the graduates already have a large network, which is an advantage for working in internationally active research institutions or companies.
