Profile
DNA and protein are the secret codes of the human body. Decipher these codes and you will get valuable insight into bodily processes. Working at the interface of Chemistry, Biology and Medicine, you will not only explore the basic principles of molecules and cells, but also their role in health and disease. This combination of scientific topics, which are translated into medical implications and solutions, is unique in the Netherlands. Most of our graduates enter a PhD programme in Nijmegen, at another Dutch university or abroad. Each year our research institutes have a number of PhD vacancies. Some of our graduates become researchers or managers in the pharmaceutical industry, the commercial sector or research organization. The programme is closely associated with two institutes that have an excellent international reputation: the Institute of Molecules and Materials and the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences. You will enter a dynamic research environment, work with top scientists, learn about the latest developments in your discipline and conduct research in state-of-the-art laboratories. Thanks to cooperation with the neighbouring University Medical Centre, there is continuous exchange between Lab and Clinic. As a Molecular Life Sciences student, you’ll choose one of the following specialisations:-Chemistry of LifeThis specialisation involves the design and synthesis of complex molecular systems, addressing challenging problems, such as wound healing and drug delivery. At the interface of biology and chemistry you will get a solid foundation in modern synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and chemical biology.-Science in SocietyThis specialisation will equip you with the tools and skills to become a professional intermediary between science and society. You will learn to analyse (governmental) science communication and connect scientific knowledge with divergent perspectives and interests of various stakeholders.-Science, Management and InnovationThis specialisation will teach you what is happening in the world of business and public administration, how innovation is managed in company strategies, how the government designs policy and how that interacts with societal challenges.
