In the midst of the growing diversity and complexity of today’s rapidly changing world, people suffering from poverty, deprivation of legal rights, and cultural and social isolation has become a growing global concern. These issues are examples of a phenomenon termed social exclusion; a complex condition that extends beyond economic disadvantage and poverty. It is a multifaceted process through which people lose political, legal, and social agency, and through which they are stigmatized or discriminated against. Social exclusion is therefore closely linked to culture and history, how we interact and make boundaries, how we think about society, what we take to be true, and how we envision a good world.This programme stems from the need to recognize the multidisciplinary nature of social exclusion. It takes seriously the need to provide analytical tools for critically reflecting on our social and cultural futures from a larger perspective based in the humanities, and anchored in subjects such as History, Ethics, Philosophy, The study of Religion, Gender Studies, Theology and Minority studies. The programme taps into a set of topical global issues and brings to the surface relevant factors and dimensions that underlie the process of social exclusion; values, ideas, beliefs, trends, ideologies, practices in combination with individual and social agency, capabilities and power.The Master’s Degree Programme in Social Exclusion is especially suited for students aiming at careers in research, politics, equal opportunities policies and human rights institutions and organizations. It prepares students for career in national and international settings, in private and public sectors, as well as in non-governmental organizations and civil society. This MA programme teaches skills for critically examining the processes of social exclusion from a multidisciplinary perspective in combination with a focus on inclusion, cohesion and sustainability. Additionally, students learn written and oral communication skills, collaborative work skills, and cultivate their analytical thinking and problem solving skills. Their competence is highly relevant in arts, writing, media careers.Study contentsThe programme takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of social exclusion, which is reflected in the offered courses. Students will also choose a specialization in one of the following subjects: Comparative Religion, Theological Ethics, Philosophy or Global History, and gain a deeper understanding of social exclusion from the point of view of that subject. The chosen specialization will also determin the subject of the students’ Master’s thesis.

Admissions Requirements
A bachelor's degree in a related field is required. Applicants from non-anglophone countries must provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 90 and IELTS 6.5).
