Profile
The sociology of law is the study of law, both local and global, in its formation and application, while formulating hypotheses, explanations and predictions about the origins, impacts and effects of legal norms, social conflict, as well as litigious culture on the social life, and the ways to address them. This involves analysing the relationship of the legal system to the other systems of social action, such as economic, political, cultural, etc. The importance of this discipline is the key to understanding the society as a reality in constant transformation and, therefore, needs a normative approach that is effective and that promotes coexistence. This Master’s degree programme provides advanced education in sociology of law and socio-legal studies. To this end, the programme focuses on building knowledge and understanding of legal matters in the society, and their cultural, political and economic settings, from a comparative, interdisciplinary and international perspective. Therefore, the sociology of law is an essential addition to not only the legal education but to any other field of the social sciences. This programme prepares the students to perform independent scientific research within the socio-legal field through identification and analysis of the new problems arising around the order and conflict in law. This master’s degree offers the possibility of gaining a combined degree with the University of Milan (Italy) and gives access to the doctoral programmes.
