Profile
The Master’s programme Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam is an opportunity to specialise in theatre and performance in one of the world’s most vibrant theatre cities. The Master’s programme Theatre Studies engages with theatre and performance in terms of its rich histories and legacies, as well as its entanglements with contemporary social, political and cultural debates. It teaches methods of analysis and study to equip graduates with the capacity to critically and persuasively reflect about the performing arts. The Master’s in Theatre Studies prepares students for a wide range of careers in theatre and performance: from scholarly research, arts administration, or theatre in education, to archival work, cultural programming, and more. Students benefit from faculty expertise in four main areas: European theatre history and historiography, theatre in education and theatre sociology, applied and community arts research, as well as contemporary performance theories. The programme is committed to heightening sensitivities in the discipline to questions around colonialism, race, gender and sexuality, as well as inequalities on a global scale.A core component of the programme is the provision of rigorous mentorship, which offers students sustained guidance in all stages of their individual dissertation research. Students can also make use of the facilities of the Department of Theatre Studies and its strong ties with cultural venues and practitioners in the city of Amsterdam.
