Profile
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Home Economics (St. Angela’s) at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) at Sligo is a four-year program designed to prepare students for a career teaching Home Economics at the secondary school level (Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate).
This program is a concurrent teacher education program, meaning students will gain both the subject-specific knowledge of Home Economics and the pedagogical skills necessary to effectively teach it.
Graduates are recognized by the Teaching Council of Ireland to be registered as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in Home Economics. While graduates are qualified teachers, the program also equips them with a strong foundation in Home Economics, opening doors to careers in various fields such as food, textiles, social and family studies, and education beyond teaching.
Students will have opportunities for practical learning through workshops, labs, and placements in schools.
The program offers a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the demands of teaching.
This program is ideal for individuals passionate about Home Economics and interested in a rewarding career in teaching. It’s also suitable for those who want a broad-based degree in Home Economics with diverse career options.
