Profile
Bioinformatics is a well-established discipline with universally recognized and required skills in the national and international markets, in both the public and private sectors. This discipline historically developed from the sequencing of the genomes of model organisms and above all of the human genome in the 1990s and has now become included in basic research in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology and the more applicative biomedical field to the point a close peer-to-peer collaboration is required between the biologist/ medic and the expert in data analysis (bioinformatics). The course mainly deals with:- Providing mathematical-statistical models which can be used in the analysis and interpretation of experimental biomolecular data. The most important aspect regards the need to integrate enormous quantities of data (big data) coming from extremely heterogeneous sources (omics technologies) to identify the key elements at the base of a specific biological process which is of interest to the medic/biologist.- Developing computational models and methods for the analysis of biological sequences and gene expression data (genome, transcriptome, proteome, epigenetic profiles, post-transcriptional and post-translational modifications, genomic protein localization, genetic polymorphisms, RNA / DNA editing, etc.) to identify phylogenetic specificities/similarities and relevant mutations, which can be used, for example, in diagnosis and personalized medical therapies (tumors, vaccines, genetic diseases).- Organizing integrated archives equipped with analysis platforms for better use and presentation of biomolecular data- Analyzing and predicting the structural and functional aspects of macromolecules and their interactions with ligands and drugs. In this regard, a new alliance between bioengineering (bioinformatics), biology, chemistry, and medicine appears to be of great strategic importance to respond to the challenges arising due to the overwhelming development of biomolecular technologies.
Notes
Admission is allowed also to students holding a four-year upper secondary school diploma issued by schools where a supplementary year was not provided. In this case, it is necessary to fulfil the specific Further Required Course assigned by the Faculty. The 2023-2024 submission deadline for candidates applying to one or more programmes on the MoveIN pre-selection platform is April 14, 2023.
Admissions Requirements
High School Diploma (or equivalent qualification) earned after no less than 12 years of studies.
