Notes
I learned a tremendous amount about this program meeting when I met with an administrator at the First Faculty of Medicine. In case you don’t know (as I didn’t a few years ago), “faculty” here does not mean professors, it means department. The first thing I learned is that there are 5 faculties (departments) of medicine here at Charles University and all of them offer English conducted programs. Three are in Prague and two are in cities that are about an hour by train. I still don't quite understand why there are three departments in the same city offering almost the same program, but it is what it is. There are slight difference, for instance the English conducted Medicine program at the 1st Faculty is bigger than the others with 700 students (about 100 of which are in the dentistry program) and the third faculty is known for it’s US style of teaching. In order to learn more about the differences, I also met with an administrator at the Third Faculty of Medicine, which is much smaller with 360 students total. The first three years in the First Faculty consists of lots of classroom time and reading. There are both large lectures and smaller practicals (about 25 students). Students are generally in class most of the day with 3-4 hours of reading each night. The Third Faculty is different as it uses problem based learning and integrates related fields instead of using stand alone courses. Further, students in the Third Faculty start seeing patients in the first year of studies as opposed to students in the First Faculty who don’t see patients until their third year. Both programs include a fairly intense Czech language learning component, and students in the Third Faculty begin this a few weeks before class starts to prepare them for their clinical classes. All of the faculties have different application dates, procedures, tuition and students can apply to as many of the different faculties as they desire. The First Faculty requires US students to have at least 2 AP scores in Chemistry and Biology and all applicants take the entrance exam. The other faculties allow certain SAT scores, and AP scores in some cases, to substitute for the entrance exam. Depending on the Faculty, entrance exams can be taken in Prague in May or June, or in New York (or other global cities) in January, April or June for a fee. In the case of the First Faculty, students who get a 244/300 have an motivation interview and then get an admission decision the very day. Students who apply to the Third Faculty, and are exempt from the entrance exam requirement, are notified within 30 days of the March 15th deadline. Student can apply to all five if they desire. The difference in the faculties that is not quantifiable is the overall feel and environment. The First Faculty has classes in a number of buildings walking distance from the city center. The Third Faculty is about 10-15 minutes by tram or metro from the city center. It’s in a beautiful residential area and classes (other than clinicals) are held in one building. When I visited the First Faculty, I was greeted with someone barking “Did they call your number?” When I explained that I was not a student she brusequely pointed to where I should wait. Students and administrators I met on the campus of the Third Faculty seemed more relaxed and friendly. In fact, they are known for being a very close knit department since it is so small and interactive in the teaching. While I think that students will get an excellent education in any of the five faculties, how these differences fit with your own preferences and personality are important considerations.
