Profile
Objectives of the study programme, structure and modules (practice), length, preparatory course. The curriculum of the general medicine course in Pécs is designed to form a foundation upon which the future physician can build his or her medical knowledge in a continuously evolving profession. The program of instruction consists of six years ofpre-clinical and clinical studies (ten semesters and one year of clinical rotations). The curriculum is drawn up in the belief that direct experience with patients, either at the bedside or in the operating theatre, is fundamental to a sound medical education. In the first or Basic module the students become familiar with the structure and functions of the healthy human body. In the second, Preclinical module the formation and features of the pathological processes are studied and the students become acquainted with the basic patient examination skills. In the Clinical module the specific diseases are taught and diagnostic and therapeutical skill of the students will be developed. Most of these studies are practical in nature mostly in the wards. Clinical rotation is a full practical year in wards. The students carry out mostly medical activity under control of the teachers. The diploma issued by the Medical School is accepted by all European Union countries and several other countries (Norway, USA, Canada, Israel etc.)
Notes
I met with two students of the General Medicine program. Katarina is in her fifth year of the program and Eva is in her second year. Both are from Boston, but Katarina also has a passport from Finland and Eva has hers from Ireland. Eva spent her last two years of high school in Ireland and Katarina has a bachelor's degree in Physics from a Finnish University, so both had international experience that led them to pursue medical studies outside of the US. Because Katarina had a bachelor’s degree, she was exempt from the entrance exam. Eva took the entrance exam which consisted of a written component and an oral exam. For the oral exam, she had to draw the structure of the eye for the oral exam (she was pretty confident in this one) and also speak about lymphoma (which she bombed). The program itself is also challenging. Eva’s parents are doctors who went to school at Oxford and Harvard and they are both impressed with the program structure, course content, and intensity of the program. The first three years consist of seminars, lectures, and practices. Attendance in classes is mandatory and the grade is based on an oral exam at the end of the semester. Students can retake the exam up to three times, and most do fail at some point in their studies. Hungarian language classes are also part of these first few years as medical language skills are needed for the clinical classes which are the majority of the 4th and 5th year of study. The sixth year is pretty cool because it’s clinical rotation that can be done in Hungary or another European country, so long as you know the language. Katarina, for instance, will do hers in Finland. Some students focus on learning another language during their first five years of study in order to do the rotation in a specific country. There is a perception in the US that it is next to impossible for people with foreign diplomas to get residencies in the US. After meeting with students and administrators in Europe, I think that that concern is inflated as many US citizens who go to reputable schools in Europe haven’t had this issue. The bigger obstacle is that one must pass the USLME tests. US medical schools are preparing their students for this test, while schools in Europe are preparing students for their own medical exam. Due to the demands of the course work, students in Europe have a hard time preparing for the USLME while attending the program so many take time off to prepare which extends their studies. Neither Eva and Katarina intend to return to the US to practice. When they graduate and pass the Hungarian medicine exam they will be able to practice across the EU and residencies as we know it are less of a packaged pre-professional program and more of a professional level that leads to specialization.Though Eva and Katarina both report that the program is challenging, neither regret their decision. Exam periods are brutal, but both have time for a social life throughout the semester. They believe that students who are focused, studious, independent, and proactive have the ability to succeed in the program.
