Profile
Undergraduate study program »Physics and astrophysics« is in its essence research-oriented. The courses aim to provide all the general theoretical and experimental knowledge in a broad spectrum of physics fields, required for research work, and to gradually involve the students in actual research. In addition to hands-on experience with practical physics problems in student laboratories (Physics Laboratory I – V), students have the opportunity to become involved in actual research work in five state-of-the-art research laboratories and centers of the UNG: Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology, Center for Atmospheric Research, Laboratory of Organic Matter Physics, Materials Research Laboratory and Laboratory for Quantum Optics. Their scientific results rank between top scientific achievements of Slovenian scientists, with publications in prestigious scientific journals such as Nature and Science. Under supervision, students obtain hands-on experience with research equipment, either remotely, at international observatories such as the Pierre Auger or the emerging Cherenkov Telescope Array, or by using locally available research infrastructure at the School of Science of the University of Nova Gorica in Ajdovščina. The equipment for characterization of the electronic properties of condensed and gaseous matter and of the biological substances makes the school site at Ajdovščina one of the most advanced centers for materials research in the world. The curriculum of the undergraduate study program »Physics and astrophysics« aims to deliver the essential theoretical knowledge as early as possible, providing the basis for research activities. In addition to basic mathematical and physical contents, students get familiar with experimental methods that are used in physical laboratory in their first year. In the second and third year, the courses increasingly focus on specific core areas of astrophysics and solid state physics, and are complemented by research work. Students complete the program with a Bachelor seminar in the third year. Graduates have acquired competences and skills to further specialize through our master program »Physics and astrophysics«, by choosing one of the two modules it offers (the Astrophysics or Solid State Physics), or by pursuing master level studies at other universities.
