Profile
The Building and Architectural Engineering Programme, offered only and completely in English, trains professional figures to effectively answer the cultural and technical challenges connected with objectives that are imperative (and which cannot be deferred) related to reducing the environmental impact of the building sector. The Programme therefore proposes to educate both new and repeating graduate students who can operate effectively in the high capacity, high energy efficiency and low environmental impact buildings sector (and more in general in the built environment), and who can transfer this skill even to non-European contexts that differ because of their climate and construction traditions, using the skill of leadership expressed by European legislation and its practical implementation (objective 2020 and beyond). The educational path of the Building and Architectural Engineering Programme considers that the design, performance modelling, building and management of an extremely high energy building system depend on a wide range of closely connected factors: the environmental response of a building is connected, in a manner that is not necessarily linear, with the combination of various parameters that act on different scales (from external microclimates, determined also by the urban form, to the individual construction or planning component, without neglecting user behaviour). The Building and Architectural Engineering graduate student is therefore a strongly innovative figure who can manage the implied complexity of the realisation of extremely energy efficient building systems: either because he/she has the culture and tools necessary for managing a design process integrated in different disciplines (multi-disciplinary) that operate at different scales (multi-scale), the only possible approach for obtaining sustainable buildings, even economically; or because he/she has acquired the ability and tools for modelling in detail the physical-technical and structural behaviour of the building components, generating therefore the skills required to design, even with contributions of strong innovation, effective technical elements and forecasting the performance duration of the building and its parts.
