The Master’s programme Classics combines linguistics, literature and cultural history. Its special profiles are narratology, discourse linguistics, intertextuality and reception, Neo-Latin and Byzantine Greek.The university of Amsterdam has a long tradition of teaching and researching Latin and Greek. Doing a MA Classics in Amsterdam has also many other advantages. Greek tragedies are regularly performed in the many theatres the city houses. Amsterdam also has its own antiquities museum, the Allard Pierson Museum, which houses a special collection of artefacts from Egypt, as well as a large collection of ceramics, glass and bronzes from Greek and Roman Antiquity. The library of the Allard Pierson Museum has an important collection in the area of Classical Antiquity in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. The Museum is closely involved with ACASA’s education. The department of Classics of the University of Amsterdam has an excellent research library with a large open stack, and the University Library (UB), which offers even more books.This Master’s degree programme is offered jointly by two universities. The University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam have combined their expertise in the fields of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology in the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). This merging of specialisations creates a stimulating environment for collaboration and study and extends your options for the supervision of your Master’s thesis.Once you enrol at the UvA, you will also automatically be enrolled as a guest student at VU Amsterdam. If you enrol at VU Amsterdam, the opposite applies. Please note that you will receive one diploma from the university at which you originally enrolled.
